Toyota 4Runner Offers Up Long List of Off-Road-Friendly Features

2018 Toyota 4Runner Off-Road Features

In the Toyota lineup, there are a few vehicles that are built to keep traveling when the road ends, and the 4Runner is definitely one of them. The rugged and capable SUV can be outfitted with a wide range of features that really help it to take on whatever you throw at it. Here in Yuma, Arizona, there is a real need for an off-road-friendly vehicle, and with a closer look at the off-road features of the latest 2018 Toyota 4Runner, it’s not hard to see that the SUV is well-equipped to give you the performance that you need.

Toyota-4Runner-Off-Road-Dirt-RedIt all starts with the four-wheel drive and Active Traction Control, which is found in the TRD Off-Road models. The system helps to prevent the spinning of the wheels when the vehicle is either started, or when it is accelerating on slippery surfaces where traction is low. The system is further enhanced by a Torsen limited-slip center differential that has a locking feature to help the distribution of wheel power.

Some other great off-road features are a Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) that adjusts the suspension for better wheel articulation, and Crawl Control, which automatically controls both the throttle and brakes on five low-speed settings. Both of the features ultimately work to improve traction regardless of the terrain that the 4Runner is traveling on. To help the 4Runner to travel on grass, dirt, sand and rock, the SUV also offers a Multi-Terrain Select feature that allows you to select a particular terrain, and that adjusts the wheelspin, throttle and traction control of the vehicle based on the terrain selected.

Although the list of features has already become quite long, there are a few more that you should know about, including the available lever- or dial-type transfer cases. The transfer case allows power to be sent to all four of the wheels, and the lever and dial types just help to customize the way you switch to a low or high range. TRD Off-Road vehicles come with a lever-type, shift-like knob. An electronic transfer case comes in the SR5/Limited trims, and makes moving from high to low as easy as turning a small knob.
